REVIEWS

"The two volume companion set, Mastering Chronic Pain: A Professional's Guide to Behavioral Treatment and Learning to Master Your Chronic Pain provides an invaluable introduction to understanding, assessment, treatment, and coping with chronic pain for pain sufferers and health care professionals.  Complex material is made readily accessible, presented in an engaging fashion.  Those who suffer from chronic pain will find many helpful suggestions for self-management both of their pain and the accompanying distress.  The therapist guide includes important information that nicely supplements the material contained in the patient volume.  Whether used alone or as a set, these volumes can provide useful guidance for helping in the management of chronic pain; they are highly recommended."

"Highly imaginative books on pain that cover topics such as ways to create happiness and pleasure in life in spite of pain, which are rarely covered by other books.  The books are easy to read, informative and produced in a way that will encourage the patient to learn new attitudes and approaches to their pain.  The therapist is certain to be delighted by a comparably imaginative, informative presentation of important information."

Regarding Mastering Chronic Pain:

"A succinct, clearly written and comprehensive introduction to pain and pain management from a cognitive-behavioral perspective.  It should prove to be a valuable addition to the libraries of physicians, psychologists and other health care professionals who work with or are studying to work with chronic non-specific pain.  The scope of details re underlying concepts and working tools is impressive and they are well presented."
*Wilbert E. Fordyce, PhD, Professor Emeritus, University of Washington, Seattle

"An excellent guide to the multidisciplinary management of chronic pain.  It should be especially useful for those who are in the process of setting up a practice in this area.  It provides practical advice on key issues such as patient selection, selecting treatment alternatives, and monitoring progress.  It also includes a number of forms and sample reports.  Finally, it provides helpful hints on handling problem patients.  I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering starting a pain management program."

"This is one of the first truly comprehensive guides to pain management specifically meant for the patient.  It integrates educational material about the nature and treatment of pain with basic instruction in pain coping skills such as relaxation training, assertion training, and problem solving techniques.  It is packed with self-help aids including questionnaires, checklists, and exercises.  This book provides an excellent selection of readings for patients attending multidisciplinary pain programs or specialized cognitive behavioral pain management programs."
